Next Winter Preparations
Living in the barren north of Massachusetts has given me a tough hide against the cold and a love of nature that
will both stay with me for my entire life. I have spent many nights enjoying the sound of snow falling while gazing
out over the forest. There have been some nights that it’s just too cold, even for me to sit outside and enjoy the
weather.
The nights where there is a very real chance of losing your nose to Jack Frost. From fires to patio heaters,
there are a few options to keep you and Jack on good terms. Simple is often the best solution. Light yourself a
fire, but make sure that you know what you are doing and that you know your fire safety. I suggest a fire pit with
an ember screen to make sure that the embers stay exactly where you want them.
I have seen some people that use old, cast iron stoves as outdoor fireplaces and, if you can
find them I think that’s an amazingly classy option. You just need to make sure to cover it or bring it inside when
it’s not in use so it doesn’t get rusted out by the rain.
The cast iron heater takes some more maintenance than a high tech patio heater but it has a unique and eccentric
feel that I really love. If you like that idea but want something a little easier to move around then you should
consider getting a chiminea.
They are like small wood fire ovens but designed for heating and fire building. These are a very cool option and
very classy at the same time. The most efficient option is modern patio heaters.
These have gotten to a level that I never thought they would. Most of them run on propane so you don’t have to
worry about extension cords or batteries. Patio heaters are also safe for use on porches and patios where a fire
pit of chiminea would be a real risk.
That alone makes patio heaters the best option for those of us that live in cities or someplace lacking in open
land. Start looking into your options now. With fall upon use the prices aren’t going to get better than now as the
stores try and push stock.
