Heat Pump Operation

Heat pump operation can be defined as a device or machine that transfers heat from a specific location to the other mechanically. In fact, most technology related to heat pump work towards transferring heat from heat source of lower temperature to heat sink of higher temperature. Freezers, refrigerators, and air conditioners are some of the most common examples of functioning that is similar to a heat pump. Almost all can easily function reversible and provide heat as desired.

Heat pump operation is nothing complex. These can be considered as a heat engine that operates in reverse. When it comes to heating, ventilation and cooling or HVAC functions, a heat pump operates just like a vapor compression machine that also has optimized heat exchangers and reversing value in order to reverse heat flow direction.

The most common heat pump operation is to extract heat from the air or from the ground. Certain air source units do not function properly when temperature is below five degree Celsius.

The heat pump operation follows the second law of thermodynamics. This means that heat cannot flow spontaneously from a colder location to a hotter area.

Heat pumps usually differ in the way they apply efforts or force to transfer heat. A heat engine works towards facilitating flow of energy from a hot source to a heat sink that’s cold and thereafter takes as small portion of it. This is the basic function of a heat pump. They also require functioning towards moving thermal energy coming from a cool source towards a heat sink that is warm.

The heat pump utilizes a certain portion of work in order to transfer heat. Hence, the actual energy amount deposited at the warm side tends to be greater as compared to the energy extracted from the cooler side by equal amount of efforts required. When it comes to a heat engine, the total amount of energy extracted from the warmer side is greater as compared to the energy deposited in the cooler heat sink.  This is because some amount of the heat has already been converted to function.

A heat pump is also used for plumbing applications. Here, it works towards heating or preheating water for domestic water heaters or swimming pools.

In some rare applications, heat extraction as well as addition features of a heat pump can be very useful and results is some real effective uses of the input energy.

Heat pump operation can also be compared to air conditioners. Consumers utilize them during hot weather and in wireless as home heaters.
